I saw Elling at Bush Theatre. The play is sharp, well observed and very funny.
The theatre is tiny and very intimate, it takes maybe 80 people. I was sitting at first row at the same level as the stage. I had to mind my feet in case I trip the actors. There was a scene when John Simm was in front of me, at the same eye level, and close enough that if I put up my hand out I would touch him. This was very weird in a wonderful way.
He is uproariously funny, and he manages to combine hysteria with pathos. Highly recommended.
Oh and the day I saw it, the actress who plays Martha's mum was in the audience. Mrs Jones and Mr Saxon indeed.
