Disney songwriter Alan Menken is a hero

And here's why.

1) "I Won't Say (I'm In Love)" from Herclues, a song The Supremes would have been proud to sing (honestly, if you've never heard this song, you really have to)

2) "Friend Like Me" from Aladdin, a song that just makes you smile

3) "Under The Sea" from The Little Mermaid, one of the greatest Disney songs ever full stop:

4) "Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast... as above:

Plus he wrote Little Shop of Horrors. Genius.

Is it bad that it really bugs me that there are only 5 muses in Hercules? *sigh*

But yes, Menken's songs are awesome!

Haha no, that always gets me too. But man, what songs!! Most underrated Disney score (and film overall), no doubt about it.

Don't forget his writing partner, the late Howard Ashman. Menken's subsequent work with Tim Rice on Aladdin, after Ashman died, really wasn't the same.

There's a really good documentary on Ashman's life on one of their Disney DVDs -- if memory serves, it's the special edition of Beauty and the Beast (the one that had "Human Again" added back in to the film, as well as the "preview release" shown at film festivals when the animation hadn't quite been finished). Wonderful music, and of course terriblytragic towards the end. I'm not ashamed to admit that it made me blub...

That Hercules song is also fantastic in the French version.
