This is the nation's Number 2

Sandi Thom - 'I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)

Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In '77 and '69 revolution was in the air
I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair

When the head of state didn't play guitar
Not everybody drove a car
When music really mattered and when radio was king
When accountants didn't have control
And the media couldn't buy your soul
And computers were still scary and we didn't know everything

When pop stars still remained a myth
And ignorance could still be bliss
And when God saved the Queen she turned a whiter shade of pale
My mom and dad were in their teens
And anarchy was still a dream
And the only way to stay in touch was a letter in the mail

When record shops were still on top
And vinyl was all that they stocked
And the super info highway was still drifting out in space
Kids were wearing hand me downs
And playing games meant kick arounds
And footballers still had long hair and dirt across their face

I was born too late into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair

Quick, pass the bucket. I'm sorry (in fact I'm not), but is this not the most infuriating set of lyrics you have ever seen? I'm up for a bit of nostalgia as much as the next guy, but this is just hideous.

That's a bizarre re-imagining of the word punk there.

I don't know where to put this.

Did you see Test The Nation anna?

Yes, this track truly is ANNOYING. And WRONG. And just plain old URGH.

I'm not keen you might guess!

Mouldy said...

Yeah but she claps when she sings.

Rob said...

That would because, to steal a phrase from Monty Python, the song is like a dose of clap.

Did you guess that I don't care for it either?

Not content with simply being a trite, wrong headed abominable piece of wrongness, by the end of the second verse she's descended into hypocracy, railing against 'computers' and the 'super info highway' yearning for 'record shops' that only stock 'vinyl,' despite the fact her success is based entirely on the gimmick of 'internet gigging.' This is trully appalling. "I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care." She got the last bit right.

The song makes me visably angry, so I'm glad I'm among like-minded people here :)

At risk of causing consternation, I quite liked it when I first heard it. I liked her voice and the tune and it was only when I saw it on the TV that I really took notice of the words. And they are stupid but there are much worse ones, aren't there?

Maybe it hits a nerve...?

I dislike everything about the song, I'm afraid- her voice, the 'tune', the lyrics... nope, nothing likable at all.
