The Age of Steel

Marie found it disappointing but as I've already informed her, she's just plain wrong. :) I thought it was great! Really fast paced (to make up for last week's rather plodding affair, that Byker Grove kid did brilliantly - playing exactly the same character he played in Byker Grove - and I have to admit to a few tears. Mickey the hero, whod'a thunk. I agree with Marie that the Cybermen didn't totally work, but I was so engrossed in Mickey's story that I wasn't all that bothered.

Also like Marie, I am a little too excited about next week's episode. Motorbikes? Aviator shades? Maureen Lipman? A quiff??
Yes please.

Yeah but Mickey wasn't really the hero. He just did what the Doctor told him to over the intercom. I was hoping for more. Instead he was still the tin dog. Having said that, I always liked the tin dog, so...

My friend Chrissie said she always felt a wee bit sorry for the Cybermen, since they didn't choose to be that way; that aside, I thought that was actually what made them scarier - their origins as human.

And as for Mickey's storyline. Awh, shucks, I'm glad I kept myself spoiler-free 'cos I didn't see that coming at all. Tin dog? Yeah, but tin dog with skills! Can you hack binary 9? Me neither.

But in original cybermen stories they did chose to be like that didn't they? Over a long period of time.

I really need to watch some old episodes...

And I know Mickey didn't do it all on his won, but the Mickey of old wouldn't have had a clue what the Doctor was going on about - see how far he's come!! :) It was a genuine surprise for me too, Lisa - always the best way!

Oops. stray word "always" in my original remark. But my sentiment remains the same: scarier, if not creepier, because of the human history...

What's happenin'? Herecy though it is to say 'round these parts, Saturday's Doctor Who was...I'm sorry...only the SECOND EPISODE I've seen of Doctor Who, and one of those was the Christmas Special. So here's my offensively un-informed opinion about it: I thought it was really good. I think it's interesting that the show appears to be judged now by an entirely different criteria than it used to be, because it presents itself so differently, and a certain type of fan who has been attracted to the series by post-Buffy post-modernism and intertexuality yadda yadda yadda has little time for running around/shooting stuff/bad special effects yadda yadda yadda. You cats is spoiled by this series, even the weaker episodes.

I really must get on with posting up my own review -- this is the first time I've been late with a write-up of a Series 2 episode. (In my defence, I've been busy concocting something else...)
